Feeding
Labs are "easy keepers" and tend to become heavy in older age. Exercise is important and we have incorporated an outdoor exercise area connected to our kennel building. This is a 1 1/2 acre fenced area where the dogs can socialize, play and generally "let off some steam". Plans call for the addition of a 15x30 filtered pond for play and training.
Feeding Comments -
Like many of you we have been distressed by the recent problems in the
pet food industry that have caused so much grief to so many people. Our
dogs are part of our family and to that end we want to feed them the
very best, and that is what we thought we were doing. In fact that is
what many companies assured us we were doing by feeding their product.
We found out that this was not always the case. Not only the standard
supermarket brands have been implicated, but some of the major "premium
grade" foods have contributed to the death of many wonderful dogs and
cats (even those sold by some veterinarians). These developments have
caused major reorganizations, cover-ups, false denials and scrambling
for clean ingredients throughout the industry.
Here at Alderwood, although we thought we had done our homework when it came to selecting dog food, were surprised at some of the companies implicated in the food recall as well as by some of the answers (or lack of) received from food manufactures concerning their product. We consider a refusal to answer an admission of guilt.
Having been a dealer for Flint River Ranch, we were dismayed to see the price increase that this quality company has asked it's customers to pay. When you are feeding nine adult dogs and numerous litters of Labradors per year, price must be a consideration as well as quality. So off we went on another hunt for a quality dog food company.
We have settled on a feeding program that uses a good quality dry
food which we supplement with table scraps, garden vegetables and
sometimes a liquid supplement (pregnant and nursing females and weaned
pups).
